May 17, 2008: OK...I really haven't been keeping up with
my reporting duties, and I apologize. But things are happening, and I can
tell you where to go to see what we have been doing over here:
First, last night I interviewed Michael Williams. He is
reopening the Comedy Act Theater at the Regency West! I let him tell
his story here.
Then, Kwaku is having his 4th annual Black History 4 Young
People class at Ben Caldwell's Kaos Network, also in Leimert Park, starting June
14. Here are the details. Please sponsor a child or two
or 20 for class!
And back in April I produced
this piece about
Mothers of murdered children.
Please share it with a potential shooter near you.
On a congratulatory note, congratulations to Speaker Karen
Bass! Leroy Hamilton
expressed it photographically
here.
Enjoy!
Thanks! Isidra Person-Lynn

Thanks for listening, all. As we bid farewell to our
friend V100, (the station was recently purchased by the Mormon owned Bonneville
Communications) I would like to take you back to V103, the short lived format on
103.9 KACE FM in the mid 90's. (Back inna Day!) Remember Tony Fields and
Mark Gunn? Remember the Jam for Peace at the Verizon Amphitheater? It was
called Irvine Meadows back then.
During the Jam for Peace my mind was blown. As news and
public affairs director, I had like 15 fat checks for charities that I'd hand
selected to be donated at the concert. Of course, the homies from Hands
Across Watts missed their stage call, and when we finished the presentation
ceremony, and I walked off stage, I ran smack dab into throngs of "former"
gang members who had been trying to get on stage. I told Tony Fields, then
PD, what was going on. By now the throngs were mad-dogging beefy white
security guards stage right. Tony told me there was nothing he could do.
He had 30 groups in slots for 25 and had his own troubles. Rapper Ice T
overheard my dilemma and saw those sun boiled tears streaming down my face.
This Jam for Peace was about to get violent.
It was Ice T's band's turn to go up on stage, and so he said
"I got this. Let them through. " And all of them filed onto stage
right. When the stage rotated, there was Ice Tea flanked by the "former" gang
members, his words, drowned out by thunderous applause as he was free styling
about the Jam for Peace and Hands Across Watts. And that was the photo
that made the front of the L.A. Times.
Shortly thereafter, V100 crumbled, and the station went back
to KACE.
The next year, The Beat started their Summer Jams, because the
Jam for Peace was no more.
But I digress. In fact, I live most of my days in digression.
Anyone who has worked in radio any length of time can
appreciate what it feels like to be fired--the sudden uncertainty of it all.
New suits walking the halls with their noses up is so unsettling.
Ironically, when The Beat (later V100) first came into the
market, I was assigned to write the cover story by Turning Point Magazine.
I interviewed Kathy Hughes and her son the COO, and have run into Ms. Hughes on
occasion since.
When they first went live, they super-served the community
like she said they would--buying schoolbooks for kids in the Compton Unified
School District. There have been many other milestones...Steve Harvey's
wild ride as morning host. Those who listen to Front Page on KJLH , now
hosted by Dominique DiPrima, will remember that she got her start on "Street
Science" and wearing Harvey's wings on the morning show, (I could never get with
those wings!). The Hoodie Awards were my favorite of their outreaches.
I will never forget the first time I heard Steve Harvey
auditioning on the Beat. I laughed so hard I cried all the way
driving down Crenshaw. I could barely catch my breath. When he was giving
away some tickets to the O'Jay's concert, a confused white winner said on the
phone "O.J.?" And Steve said "Aw, Hell, will you white people just let it
go? I'm talking about the Ojays the hottest tickets in town and all you
heard is O.J. Simpson. Let it go!"
To Ron Turner, Leonard Pitts, DJ Paradise, Janice Salgado and
all the personalities (on air and off air) that I knew--whether it was the Beat
or V100, we remember you, and we wish you all
smooth landings wherever you go. -- IPL

The Charlotte Austin Story (1999 featuring Lela Rochon); because she
